Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Outdoor Furniture

What materials are used in your most durable line of urban outdoor furniture?

When it comes to urban outdoor furniture, durability is not just a feature—it is a necessity. In high-traffic city settings, furniture faces relentless exposure to sun, rain, wind, and daily wear. Our most durable line, the MetroFortress series, is engineered with a carefully selected combination of materials designed to withstand these challenges for years.

The primary structural material is heavy-gauge, powder-coated aluminum. Unlike standard aluminum, this grade is thicker (typically 2.0–3.0 mm wall thickness) and receives a multi-layer powder coating process that includes a zinc-rich primer and a UV-stable polyester top coat. This system resists chipping, fading, and corrosion even in coastal or industrial environments.

For hardware and fasteners, we use 316 marine-grade stainless steel. This alloy contains molybdenum, which provides superior resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion—common issues in urban areas with road salt or humidity. Every bolt, screw, and bracket is made from this material to prevent rust from compromising the structure.

The seating and tabletop surfaces are crafted from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lumber, also known as modified polymer wood. This material is 100% recyclable and contains UV inhibitors that prevent fading and cracking. Unlike natural wood, HDPE does not splinter, absorb moisture, or attract insects. It also withstands temperature extremes from -40°F to +140°F without warping.

To enhance stability in uneven urban settings, the base of each piece is fitted with non-marking, UV-stabilized thermoplastic rubber (TPR) glides. These protect flooring surfaces and absorb vibration, while the rubber itself remains flexible in cold weather.

Optional accessories, such as umbrella sleeves and tablet holders, are made from UV-resistant polypropylene (PP) and glass-filled nylon. These materials add functionality without compromising the furniture's core durability.

Every joint is welded internally and then ground smooth before powder coating, eliminating crevices where moisture can accumulate. In testing, MetroFortress furniture has exceeded 10,000 hours of accelerated UV exposure and 1,500 hours of salt spray testing without structural degradation, proving that these materials are not only chosen—they are validated.

For architects, city planners, and facility managers seeking furniture that balances aesthetics with extreme endurance, this material palette delivers. It is a closed-loop system: the aluminum and stainless steel are infinitely recyclable, and the HDPE lumber is made from post-consumer recycled content. In short, our most durable line is built to endure the city, and to do so sustainably.
